HCC Instructor Serves as Textbook Reviewer

Donna White Haywood Community College Medical Office Administration and Medical Assisting instructor Donna White recently had the unique experience of going through the programs she teaches as the role of the student. White was a textbook reviewer of “Exploring Electronic Health Records,” third edition.

“Through this project,” she explains. “I was able to get the full student experience. As a result, I can ensure students have the tools they need to be successful.”

As one of eight reviewers, White reviewed the content, worked through all the exercises, and gave feedback for improvements. According to White, the book offers students hands-on experience with a simulated electronic health record (EHR). The simulated EHR has many of the same features and capabilities of EHR systems that health systems actually use. This gives students a head start when entering the workforce.

White says, “It was an interesting project to be able to see it from the student viewpoint. It also helped me stay current as an instructor.”

White always incorporates President George W. Bush’s 2004 Technology Agenda early on to her students, illustrating the importance of the career they are entering. This agenda started the assurance that most Americans have electronic health records to ensure complete health care information is available for most Americans at the time and place of care.

HCC’s Medical Office Administration and Medical Assisting programs allow graduates the opportunity to help others and the community. Careers include work at a wide variety of employers in the medical industry, including medical offices, clinics, dental offices, and more. Both offers graduates an opportunity to be essential employees at a medical practice and integral members of the healthcare and administrative team.
